    Where I grew up, the career paths laid out were doctor, lawyer, or teacher. I started studying to be a teacher and quickly realised that 7am starts were not for me.I didn't really even know what marketing was. Having fallen into research, I couldn't be happier, but what I would have given for something like this to teach me the opportunities that await.I'll be sending this link to my nephews, but thought I'd share it here too for anybody who might benefit!

    I came across something I wrote about the Brexit vote 7 years ago. My thoughts haven't really changed since then, so I figured I would share:Maybe you think having left Europe, that I am one of the lucky ones. And in many ways I am. I only have to watch the impact that UK leaving the EU will have on my family in UK, my British and EU national friends living in UK, and my British friends living in the EU.But I'm not just mourning the immediate impact, the fear and the uncertainty many people are suffering, or the publicly-validated xenophobia and racism that has swung from a worrying undercurrent to a physically sickening infestation of every aspect of British society.No, I'm also mourning the futures changed, the friendships and relationships doomed not to happen, the barrier erected in the path of adventure, possibility and opportunity for every British person, and also many Europeans.I take it especially personally, because the EU made me who I am today. When I graduated in the midst of a global recession, fresh out of the closet, the EU meant that there was somewhere for me to go.I longed to live in a big city, but couldn't afford London. So I booked a one way Easyjet flight to Berlin, packed up my limited German A-Level memories in a cheap suitcase and headed to Liverpool Airport.My plan was quite simple (some - including me - might say naive): I had a room found on Craigslist and a vague plan to get a job in an Irish pub. Freedom of Movement meant that I didn't need more than that. Whether I lasted a month or a year, the fact that I, a 23 year old from the North of England could do this so easily amazed (and kinda terrified) me, and I was determined to give it my best shot.Everything that has happened in my life since has hinged on that possibility that will not be afforded the next generation.Everyone I have met, the friends from around the world who have enriched my life and outlook on the world, the relationships I have formed, the diverse cultural and social experiences I have had, the amazing travel opportunities I have been so fortunate to enjoy.The career I fell into only to discover I enjoy and am quite good at, the chance to push myself and move again to Sydney, then to Kuala Lumpur to build a new life, and the self-confidence to make that move are also all byproducts of UK's position in the EU. Every atom of my being has been shaped and improved by the EU.I will do everything I can to convince the future generations of the wonders that can happen when looking outside of the UK for friends, opportunities and inspiration, but I'm pretty sure the 14 year old closeted and very insecure me who hadn't left the British Isles since being a toddler would not have listened, and that I would not exist as who I am today.To all my European loved ones, stay strong, stay angry, and stay open, the world can still be an amazing place if you let it be. I love you🇪🇺❤️🇬🇧#brexit #bettertogether
