Redlands Police Department Weekly Update (Dec. 21-Jan. 4)

Due to the holidays, this log covers two weeks of incidents.

Redlands Police located a stolen vehicle traveling in the area of Brockton Avenue and New York Street Wednesday morning, Jan. 3. As an officer followed the vehicle, awaiting backup, the vehicle stopped behind a business in Citrus Plaza. When the officer attempted to contact the driver, the vehicle fled and failed to yield. Due to weather conditions and erratic driving by the suspect, the pursuit was called off. Officers followed the vehicle’s direction of travel and located it unoccupied on Almond Avenue, west of Mountain View Avenue. The officer saw the suspect running and he was taken into custody and arrested without incident.

A property owner arrived to check on his vacant property in the 1700 block of Stratford Circle Tuesday, Jan. 2, and found a woman and her four children in the process of moving into the house. The woman had rented the home through Facebook Marketplace, paying a suspect who identified himself as the owner. Once the situation was sorted out, the actual owner allowed the victim two days to remove her property from the residence.

RPD responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Redlands Boulevard and Colton Avenue Tuesday evening, Jan. 2. Officers arrived to find a Ford Ranger disabled on a K-rail that paralleled the railroad tracks. Inside the bed of the pickup, they found a 35-year-old man suffering from multiple injuries, including broken legs and significant blood loss. Metrolink was notified to stop Arrow line service and officers performed first aid to stabilize the victim until paramedics arrived. The 73-year-old driver was located inside the vehicle, showing signs of intoxication. Witnesses reported they had followed the vehicle as it was driving erratically west on Colton Avenue prior to the collision. Just before the slight turn at Redlands Boulevard, the driver made a sharp right turn directly at the victim, who had been walking on the sidewalk, striking him. Investigators determined the driver’s actions were intentional and arrested him for attempted murder. The victim was transported to the hospital.

Police responded to a single-vehicle collision at about 2 a.m. New Year’s Day. The driver was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Redlands Boulevard and drove into the center median near Palm Avenue. She was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. No injuries were reported.

RPD responded to reports of a DUI driver at the intersection of 6th and Vine streets at about 5 a.m. New Year’s Day. The vehicle collided with several light poles and a fire hydrant on Orange Street. The driver was found to be suffering from a medical emergency and was not DUI. She was transported to the hospital. City crews responded to shut off water and repair the damaged fire hydrant.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, officers from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department helicopter advised RPD they were in pursuit of a carjacking suspect from another city that had come into Redlands and was fueling at a station at San Bernardino Avenue and Orange Street. Officers arrived as the suspect vehicle was leaving the gas station and went in pursuit. The chase reached speeds exceeding 120 mph when the vehicle entered the 210 freeway. Due to conditions, RPD terminated the pursuit. The suspect was eventually taken into custody by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

RPD was contacted Saturday morning, Dec. 30, by Kaiser Hospital in Fontana, reporting an assault victim in their emergency room. The victim reported that he was assaulted by four men as he left a bar in downtown Redlands and robbed of his wallet, containing cash and credit cards. The victim’s injuries were not life threatening. RPD is continuing to investigate.

Redlands Police responded shortly after 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, to the intersection of Lugonia Avenue and Church Street to a report by a passerby of a possibly deceased man in the middle of the roadway who appeared to have been hit by a vehicle. Police responded along with Redlands Fire Department paramedics who confirmed the victim, later identified as a 72-year-old Redlands man, was deceased. Police closed the intersection and conducted an investigation. Investigators located paint chips and vehicle debris and were able to identify the suspect vehicle as a 2000-2003 Mitsubishi. Officers reviewed surveillance camera footage and located a possible suspect vehicle, a 2002 Mitsubishi SUV. Police contacted the 61-year-old registered owner of that vehicle at his workplace and determined that he was the driver of the hit-and-run vehicle. He was arrested and his vehicle was impounded as evidence.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, officers responded to a call of shots heard at the Redlands Mall. The victim reported she was involved in a verbal altercation with another woman when a man jumped out of a black SUV and fired multiple rounds into the air. The man and woman then got into the SUV and fled the area. The incident is under investigation.

A man was arrested for DUI and child endangerment Friday, Dec. 29, after he collided with a parked tow truck on San Bernardino Avenue and Texas Street with his juvenile son in the car.

RPD responded shortly before 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, to an alarm at Redlands Pharmacy, 245 Terracina Blvd., and discovered a glass entry door shattered, the pharmacy door ripped off and property scattered. The incident is under investigation.

An officer patrolling the area following the burglary call at the pharmacy pulled into a parking lot of a liquor store in the 1700 block of East Lugonia Avenue and observed two vehicles, including a white SUV with the trunk open and a black Cadillac with no license plate, along with eight men standing nearby. The vehicles took off quickly and while the officer was in pursuit of the Cadillac, a passenger jumped out of the car and began running. The driver eventually yielded and was taken into custody. Numerous cartons of ci******es and alcohol were located in the vehicle and police later confirmed a burglary at the liquor store. The owner of the store was able to identify the property along with cash stolen from the business. The investigation is continuing.

Metrolink security contacted RPD on Christmas morning to report a man down west of the tracks on 6th Street. Officers found the victim on the ground with facial injuries. He was transported to the hospital where a CT scan revealed a brain bleed and other internal injuries consistent with an assault. Police were unable to locate a crime scene. The incident is under investigation.

RPD responded to a traffic collision shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Cypress Avenue and Cajon Street. One vehicle was traveling north on Cajon at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the stop sign, colliding with the second vehicle and sending it spinning into the front yard of a residence. The first vehicle then collided with a parked car outside the residence. A passenger in the first vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was determined not to be DUI.
