What is a service upgrade?
Service upgrades are when utility providers increase the power from the grid to your home. Typically, they increase homes from 100a, to 200a service. It is estimated as many as 48 million homes in the US will require a service upgrade to electrify their homes.+
How expensive is a service upgrade?
Service upgrades can cost upwards of $20,000 and can take months to complete based on utility availability.+, ^
What triggers a service upgrade?
Most common triggers are when homeowners look to add electric appliances such as heat pumps, Level 2 EV chargers, battery systems, solar panels, and even hot tubs to their homes.^

Panel FAQs
What is SPAN Panel?
SPAN Panel is a smart electrical panel designed to modernize your home energy system by completely replacing your existing panel.
With SPAN, you can control and monitor every circuit in your home from a smartphone or tablet, understand how your home is sourcing, storing, and using energy in real time, and modernize your home with electrification upgrades like solar and battery storage.
Why is SPAN more expensive than other electrical panels?
Unlike a traditional electrical panel, SPAN Panel gives you circuit-level control and provides actionable insights into how energy is being used in your home. With the SPAN Home app, you get real-time insight into which circuits and appliances are consuming the most energy, as well as the ability to shut off any circuit in the home at a moment’s notice—even when you’re away.
When paired with solar and battery storage, SPAN makes your home more self-reliant and helps you endure even the most severe power outages by enabling more flexible backup. With SPAN, you can extend your backup duration by powering only the circuits you need during an outage, and none of the ones you don’t.
Finally, SPAN Panel enables high-value electrification upgrades (induction stoves, heat pumps, EV chargers, etc.) that help you move away from gas appliances and prepare your home for an all-electric future.
Which battery storage systems are compatible with SPAN Panel?
SPAN Panel is currently compatible with the following battery storage systems:
– Tesla Powerwall and Powerwall+ (with Backup Gateway 1, Backup Gateway 2, or Backup Switch)
– FranklinWH aPower batteries
– Enphase IQ Battery (with SPAN Remote Meter Kit1)
– LG Chem RESU and SolarEdge Energy Bank (with SolarEdge Energy Hub Backup Interface2)*

How can SPAN Panel help me avoid an electrical service upgrade?
Most older homes weren’t designed to support the increasing energy needs tied to modern lifestyles. Following traditional installation approaches that assume all appliances are drawing power at the same time, many homeowners discover they can’t add EV chargers or other appliances with high power consumption without first performing costly and time-consuming electrical service upgrades. Our friends at Rewiring America have provided a great overview on this phenomenon.
SPAN is a certified Energy Management System that works behind the scenes to monitor electrical loads throughout the home, automatically pausing pre-selected circuits on rare occurrences when total consumption temporarily exceeds the home’s maximum electrical capacity (until other loads cycle off and total consumption drops). Today, this functionality is available primarily for EV charger loads.
Does SPAN Panel require an internet connection?
Yes—an internet connection is required to control SPAN, monitor energy usage data with the SPAN Home app, and receive new features via free over-the-air software updates.
SPAN Panel contains an internet-connected gateway that connects via ethernet and Wi-Fi. In the case of an internet outage, SPAN Panel automatically switches to a cellular backup connection when available.
(NOTE: Cellular backup should not be relied on as a primary mode of connectivity and may not be available in areas where cellular service is poor.)
Do I need more than one SPAN Panel?
If your home has more than 32 circuits or a utility service above 200A (or if you have multiple properties), more than one SPAN Panel may be required to accommodate your needs.
We’re excited to build out additional functionality for customers with multiple SPAN Panels via free over-the-air updates. Review our multi-panel FAQ for considerations regarding the current multi-panel experience.
I’m located outside the United States. Can I get SPAN?
Today, SPAN is only available in the U.S. (in all 50 states). If you are located outside of the U.S., please keep an eye out for future announcements as we continue to grow.
