How many people band their map and potash on with their planter? Is it time consuming as always filling all the time? Got 7200 john deere planter so talking about dry boxes on those planters. Sitting here on this cold morning doing some thinking.

Once upon a time had a 7200 8 row with homemade 12" box extensions, so it held quite abit. Seems like we got about 8 acres to a fill, IIRC.

We have been applying 9-23-30 2x2 for the past three years per soil tests in corn. We use a gravity bed with auger. Usually apply 200 to 250 lbs. per acre. Our planter holds 1200 lbs of 9-23-30. SO we.can planter 6 acres. It will cut what we can plant per day by at least 20%.

You'll want a good size tender wagon/auger setup perfectly with a cross auger on planter for quick fill ups. How big that tender wagon is kinda depends I guess on whether you have help of someone to occasionally get the wagon filled for you. Also, you're adding more moving parts to the planter with augers, bearings, fertilizer discs. Just be ready for more repairs/breakdowns.

Here is our set up. The 6 row covers 8-9 acres per fill and the 12 will do about 26. 235lb/ac.

If I were going to dry on the planter I would fork out the cash and pull a Montag box. This way you can cover acres or remove when you don’t want it, It’s more costly, but will be less of a hassle in the future. Just my opinion. Plus you can sue the Montag for other things such as a nitrogen program or strip tool in the future.

Time consuming? I save one application trip, and if you work the fertilizer in with tillage that's another trip saved.

I have a eight inch auger on my tender wagon, it takes about ten minutes to fill eight boxes with extensions on my sixteen row. I can cover 20 to 40 acres depending on the rate being applied.

We run a 12 row JD 7200 with dry fertilizer. We put down 100 lbs/acre of 11-52-0 with the planter, and VRT all of the potash and any additional 11-52-0 that is needed beyond the 100 lbs/acre that the planter puts on to reach our desired/required phosphorus rates. Get around 28 acres per fill doing this. Years ago, we used to blend the potash in and put down closer to 200 lbs/acre (don't recall the total analysis), but switching to our current program drastically sped up the process/acres per fill (which still seems slow at times).

Not the best picture of the planter but its a 12row 1770 deere. With the extensions I get about 18 acres to a fill at 250lbs er acre.

I broadcast the bulk of my P&K needs and apply a starter rate of DAP (70#) with the planter. This is with a 7000 planter using the standard rate augers. I did have to make a couple new sprockets to get down to that rate.

Without the factory dry fertilizer bins and augers, I prefer liquid because it is easier to install, and to set the rate than dry with home made equipment.

Applying fertilizer with the planter does slow the planting process with the time required to fill the fertilizer hopper or tank, sometimes more often than filling the seed hopper(s). Then it may be necessary to plant a bit slower to apply the liquid fertilizer based on constant pressure and flow set by orifices. Ground driven might prove to be handier but more complicated to set rates.
