For those of you who have used the 7200 planters with dry boxes mounted on the frame and single disk fertilizer openers, what have your experiences been? Are they relatively accurate at metering the dry fertilizer? Do you have many problems with pins shearing, chains breaking, etc? If it rains while you're out there are the boxes tight enough that you don't have problems with the fertilizer caking up? Do the single disk openers give problems in no-till conditions (ie, thick wheat stubble, corn stalks, or milo)? Any other issues with the dry fertilizer system in general? What have you found is the best way to fill the fertilizer boxes?

We've planted a lot of acres with a 7200 set up for liquid but they weren't the JD single disk openers so we don't know anything at all about the fertilizer system that we're thinking about.

Here's a few picks of what we're looking at so there is no confusion.

Thanks

We have a 8-row 1780 with the dry fert and single disk openers. Seems that the rate listed int he book is a bit light, about 10%. It is consistent across the width of the planter and in all conditions. I had some bolts break, but that was because parts of the driveline were not lined up properly. When I corrected that, the problems when away. Rain had not bothered the fertilizer. The openers also have shearbolts which may break with excessive stones. Overall I like them, make sure you have a crossauger.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you have terraces where you're at? How do they go over them?

We used to run a couple 8 rows with that setup. The box lids should be ok in rain if they're not cracked. We did shear some pins but that's bound to happen. Put a bright colored zip tie on the shaft at each box so they are easy to see turning or not. We had unverferth hydraulic cross augers on ours and that worked pretty slick. I'm not sure how they would work on a 16 row unless you had 3 of them. Just make sure you have a good reach on your fertilizer tender auger, hopefully one that swivels. We had one mounted on a gravity box and it worked well.

We had an 8 row 7200 with a similary dry setup. Now have a 1750 8 row with dry and a similar setup. Our experience is similar to others with the rain--fine as long as lids are on. We have broken the shear pins on the fertilizer opener going over a terrace--need to slow down and take it a little easier. In no till conditions when planting in heavy corn stalks we will on occasion get stalks up in the drive chains which can throw the chains and cause shear pins to break. We use a truck with a bed and hoist and a hydraulic endgate mount auger to fill with fertilizer. I would concur with the other post on the book fertilizer rates--we alway run about 10% above the book setting--sometimes more. We like to put UREA (46-0-0) down with the planter. With high humidity we have had problems with this building up on the fertilizer augers which causes the rate to slow down. So then you have to pull them, clean them up and put them back in. We try to have the fertilizer fairly empty when traveling down the road to take it a little easier on the planter. For the most part we get along fairly well.

Thanks guys. For those of you who have had the single disk dry fertilizer openers throughout several planter models, have the single disk openers improved with each model? Are there cost effective upgrades that are available to prevent any problems?

Haven't really seen much change or upgrade that really stands out to me.

Don't know about dry, but we had the same single disc openers on a 12 row 7200 with liquid, and I think those are the best fertilizer openers on the market. Our were same as the dry, but had liquid tubes on them, of course. The first set of tubes caused problems, but Deere replaced them with cast boots similar to the dry boots, and we had no more problems.

central Mi.

dry fert works great if your fertlizer blend has at least 50% map. My dad always said that dap does not meter worth a hoot when its muggy or humid out.

We're running single disk openers on a 6RN dry. Really like the single disk openers compared to the old double-disk openers.

Thanks for the input everyone. From what you guys are saying we probably shouldn't have too much to worry about. We'll most likely be looking to go this way.
