Manual indicates 550 lb capacity. But ours has extensions. Any guesses as to how much they hold? Phosphate (11-52-0)

How do you tell what type of auger we have? There is low rate, regular and high rate auger. Not sure how to tell what we have. Depth of flighting? Manual has part numbers for the augers but hard to find a number on them.

Thanks in advance.

I would guess 350+ lb. I have regular rate augers and I would guess flighting on ends is only about 1/4 to 5/16 inch deep. Neighbor had extensions like that and built a brace kit down to the opener mounting tube to take a little stress off the box mounting brackets. He was just a little nervous about stress cracks.

LaSalle, Ontario, 10 miles south of Detroit Mi.

sorry cant help on capacity but in the manual there will be a chart and a calibration page. you unhook 1 hose drive the distance stated in the manual and weigh the amount of fertilizer that has fallen out that 1 opening, collect it in a can to be able to weigh it. look at the gears the chain is set at and find the amount of fertilizer you are putting on. that should tell you which augers you have. sorry my book is in the shop. maybe someone has the info handy.

I hope this makes sense.

Couldn't find the box extensions on the Shoup website, but according to the catalog they increase capacity "up to 400#". I would highly reccomend some kind of reinforcement under the boxes to keep them from cracking. Had some extensions on mine last year, only used them with urea, and the boxes started to crack at the supports. I cut some flat steel to use run the length of the boxes to spread the load . Patrick

I figure 700 lbs in each box on mine, maybe a bit more. Best way to tell which augers you have is just take one out and bring it to deere. One pin on the coupler and the auger comes right out the end. Or maybe you will get lucky and one will still have a legible number on the casting. I would guess 90% of planters have the regular rate augers.

We always figured 900lbs total in a standard 7000 box equipped with extensions. That will depend on your blend of course . High rate and low rate augers are the same 'spiral', with the high rate augers the ends of each auger will almost touch in the center, if they are set for standard rate there is a gap of maybe 4-6 inches in the center. With the high rate extending farther into the box ( almost touching in the middle) more of the deep flighting is exposed... which obviously pulls more fert into the discharge.. hence " high rate" If you can snap a picture of your augers it's obvious which is which.

To determine which augers you have measure the flighting pitch. Measure the distance between flights. Regular rate augers have 1 1/4" pitch. High rate will be more pitch (1 3/4"). low rate less (3/4").

Shouldn't there be more revolutions of flighting in a high rate?

No. One revolution with the high rate augers moves the fertilize 1 3/4" where the low rate only moves 3/4" per revolution. Think of it like a fine thread/ course thread bolt. It takes more turns for the fine thread
bolt to screw in the same distance as the course thread. It looks like you have regular rate augers (1 1/4") to me from the picture.

Checking Dry Fertilizer Rates (U.S. Measurement)
To check the exact number of lb. of fertilizer that will actually be delivered for 30 in. row spacing, proceed as follows:

Remove one hose from either fertilizer hopper and attach a plastic bag or other suitable container, under the opening in the hopper. Engage the fertilizer attachment and drive forward for 174 ft. Weigh the amount of fertilizer caught in the container (in lb.) and multiply that amount by 100. The result will be the lb. of fertilizer delivered per acre when planting in 30 in. rows.

NOTE: For 36 in. rows, drive 145 ft. For 38 in. rows, drive 138 ft.

This is the most surefire way of getting the rate you want applied. The charts cannot take into account different densities of the different fertilize mixes we all use.

We have a kinze 6 row with the extentions on it (should be very close to the same box) and it is at almost exactly 3000 lbs. Per fill on 3 boxes with 64 lb/ft3 Product.

That planter does fine without any supports on the boxes for the extra weight, but it is 1 year old. When i put extensions on my other older kinze planter this winter, i will be putting supports on the 15 year old fiberglass boxes to help distibute the weight.

My bad Menno, I think OlsonKrist has it correct. I was thinking about the Kinze dry augers. For some reason I had it in my head that they both used same augers.
